How far should you sit from a 49-inch monitor?

About 70 to 90 centimetres for most people. Why that works for a 49-inch 32:9 curved display, and how to set yours up.

Nocturne 49 from above

For a 49-inch 32:9 curved monitor, most people sit about 70–90 cm (28–35 inches) away, centred on the screen. At that distance the full width is within comfortable eye and head movement, and at 5120 × 1440 the pixels are fine enough to disappear.

Why that range works

  • Pixel density. A 49-inch 5120 × 1440 display is about 109 pixels per inch. For 20/20 vision, individual pixels become indistinguishable at roughly 80 cm.
  • Field of view. At 80 cm, a 49-inch 32:9 picture fills around 74° of your horizontal view: immersive, but with the centre third comfortably in focus for work.
  • The curve. An 1800R or 1500R curve brings the edges toward you, so at this distance they are not much further from your eyes than the centre.

Try your own numbers with the viewing distance calculator.

Setting it up

  1. Centre your chair on the middle of the screen.
  2. Set the top of the picture at or slightly below eye level.
  3. Put your main window in the centre third and supporting windows to either side.
  4. For games and simulators, sit a little closer for immersion; for documents, a little further back.

Desk depth

At 70–90 cm, a desk about 70 cm (28 in) deep works well. Note the stand depth: 14.2 in for Nocturne 49 and about 11 in for Horizon 49. A VESA arm can free the desk and move the display back.
