The Reflection: the story of our monogram

The Alter Ego monogram is a letter A standing on a horizon above its own mirror image. What it means and how it was drawn.

Every house has a mark. Ours is called The Reflection.

What it shows

A single capital A stands on a fine horizontal line, the horizon. Beneath the line, the same A is drawn upside down, in a much finer stroke, as if reflected in still water or a dark screen. Together, the A and its reflection form a diamond.

What it means

An alter ego is the other self: the version of you that appears when nothing is holding you back. The upper A is the person at the desk. The lower, finer A is the self that appears on the screen: the photograph, the cut, the design, the game. The horizon is the surface between them, which is exactly what a display is.

How it was drawn

The upper A is drawn with a strong stroke and a sharp apex, its feet cut flat on the horizon. Its crossbar is a hairline, borrowing the contrast of classical type. The reflection is drawn at a fraction of the weight and half the opacity, so it reads as an image rather than an object.

The wordmark that accompanies it, ALTER EGO, is built from the same geometry: strong uprights, hairline inner bars, wide spacing.

Where it appears

The monogram identifies the house: on packaging, on documents and on this site. The front of each display carries only the wordmark, printed once beneath the panel. Signed once, quietly.

The horizon everywhere

Look for the horizon line across Alter Ego: under every product photograph, where each display stands on a dark mirror plane, and where the panel meets the bezel. The Maison.
