Monitor size calculator: width and height from the diagonal
Find the real width and height of any monitor, in inches and centimetres, from its diagonal and aspect ratio or resolution.
–Pixels per inch
–Width × height (in)
–Width × height (cm)
–Distance where pixels disappear (20/20)
–Pixel pitch (mm)
–Megapixels
–Horizontal field of view at your distance
–Pixels per degree at your distance
How screen dimensions are calculated
A screen's diagonal and its aspect ratio determine its width and height:
- Width = diagonal × W ÷ √(W² + H²)
- Height = diagonal × H ÷ √(W² + H²)
where W and H are the resolution or the aspect ratio. These figures describe the visible picture; the display with its bezel and stand is slightly larger.
Common sizes compared
| Display | Shape | Picture width | Picture height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27″ 16:9 | 16:9 | 23.5 in | 13.2 in |
| 34″ 21:9 | 21:9 | 31.4 in | 13.1 in |
| 40″ 21:9 (5K2K) | 64:27 | 36.9 in | 15.5 in |
| 49″ 32:9 | 32:9 | 47.2 in | 13.3 in |
A 49-inch 32:9 display is the same height as a 27-inch 16:9 display and twice as wide. Is a 49-inch monitor too big?
Will it fit my desk?
Allow several inches beyond the picture width for the frame, and check the stand depth: Alter Ego Nocturne 49 is 47.2 inches wide and 14.2 inches deep on its stand.
